What it is — a family voice assistant in Czech. You wake it with “Breberko, vstávej” (“Breberka, wake up”), ask about the weather, play the radio, send a message to grandma, put a meeting in the family calendar or have a recipe read to you step by step. It runs in the browser on computers, tablets and phones, and installs as an app.

We built it for our own family. It runs largely on free tiers — Static Web Apps Free, the Cosmos DB free tier, Speech F0 and the Groq free tier. A single Exchange Online license is paid for the shared mailbox that messages and calendar invites come from. The language model can run entirely free on Groq, or with Gemini for tens of Czech crowns a month.

Breberka's main page on the computer — clock, weather, family calendar and messages
When Breberka sleeps, it works as a desk clock: time, name days, weather for your location, today's calendar and new messages.

Waking up and falling asleep

it wakes on hearing “Breberko, vstávej”, falls asleep on “Breberko, jdi spát” or by itself after a while of silence. While asleep it sends neither silence nor TV noise — volume, length and frequency filters let only real speech through to transcription.

Conversation

it uses informal address, greets according to the time of day and calls each family member by name. On command it switches to English and back. Its little face changes color and expression depending on whether it is listening, thinking or speaking.

Morning briefing

“Dobré ráno, co mám dnes?” (“Good morning, what's on today?”) — weather, the name day, today's alerts, unread messages and shopping, all at once in one answer.

Family calendar

the family's shared calendar — it reads out what's ahead today, tomorrow or this week, and writes down a meeting on request: “Zapiš do kalendáře rodinný oběd v neděli ve dvanáct.” It asks for missing details, rejects unknown names and past dates, repeats everything before writing, and only writes after confirmation, which the server enforces too. Invitees get an email invitation, and your own future meetings can be edited or deleted.

Weather, holidays and name days

weather, air quality and pollen for the device's current location or any other place. Public holidays, whose name day it is, what the date is.

News, exchange rates and Wikipedia

news from ČT24, CNB rates, explanations from Wikipedia.

Web search

opening hours, prices and other up-to-date facts. Breberka always says which website they come from — and when it can't find an answer, it admits it instead of making things up.

Radio, timers and reminders

Czech Radio stations — Radiožurnál, Dvojka, Vltava and regional ones; the radio quiets down during conversation. “Za čtvrt hodiny mi připomeň troubu.” A reminder for a specific time is stored on the server and arrives as a phone notification even with the app closed.

Trip planning

“Jak se dostanu vlakem do Brna?” or “Naplánuj cestu domů.” A link appears in the transcript — car, walking and cycling open Google Maps, public transport searches connections in timetables. The destination can be an address, a town, a stop or a saved place from the Moje místa panel; Breberka asks about any missing detail. It is just a link — Breberka doesn't know the travel time or distance.

Messages

“Pošli babičce vzkaz, že v neděli přijedeme na oběd.” Breberka repeats the recipient and the wording and only sends after confirmation. The recipient also gets an email, and the sender sees whether the message was read. A deferred message “až přijde domů” is delivered once the recipient says “jsem doma” or their phone is near the saved home — Breberka doesn't track location and never speaks up on its own. After 30 days messages delete themselves.

Recipe book

you add a recipe by pasting text, photographing a page from a cookbook or dictating it. Serving-size recalculation, checking off ingredients, a timer on every timed step. Vařit s Breberkou (“Cook with Breberka”) walks through the procedure step by step in large type and reads each step aloud.

Shopping list

the whole family's shared list divided by shops; anyone can add or check off. “Přidej na nákup dvě mléka a chleba z večerky.” Ingredients from a recipe are added with one button, bought items delete themselves after three days.

Mobile and installation

on the phone, the app has a bottom bar — Kalendář, Nákup, Recepty, Vzkazy — with the microphone under your thumb. Moje místa remembers home and a favorite place for route links and for “až přijdu domů” messages; only their owner sees the address. It installs as a PWA from the address bar, with no app store; reminder notifications are switched on in the Help section on each device separately.

Access and privacy

sign-in with a Microsoft account, personal or work; only family members from the list get inside, with an admin role for management. Recordings are never stored — a stretch of speech goes to transcription and is discarded right away. Only the server knows the service keys.

Integrations

emails and the family calendar through Microsoft Graph; the mailbox is shared with permissions limited to it (Exchange RBAC for Applications), and the app may only access one SharePoint site (Sites.Selected). The Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite language model with a gpt-oss-120b backup on Groq, Groq Whisper speech transcription, a Czech voice from Azure AI Speech. Data from Open-Meteo, ČT24, Czech Radio, CNB and Wikipedia.
